Reader’s Question:

I was told that getting a sports car insurance policy would be quite expensive. Is that true? If so, then why?

Clarissa

Houston, TX

When you think about sports cars the words “speed”, “power”, and “popularity” inevitably comes to mind. These three words are also the common reason why sports car insurance coverage can be quite expensive. Simply put, anyone who drives a sports car is tempted to show it around and drive it really fast which makes the risk of car theft and getting into more car accidents higher. The higher this risk, the bigger the premiums charged by insurers to compensate. Here are six (6) other things that could leave you paying very high car insurance rates:

1. Bad Credit – Let your credit slide and your insurer may take you off their “responsible driver” category and charge more.

2. Poor Driving History – This is one of the easiest ways to make or break your eligibility for cheaper rates. The more traffic violations you get and the more accidents you get into, the higher the rates.

3. Filing Too Many Claims – Similarly, filing too much claims will raise a red flag with your insurer. They will take it that you are getting into more trouble (see Poor Driving History) and therefore must charge more accordingly.

4. Accumulating More Mileage – The more you are on the road, the higher the likelihood of getting into a car accident and the bigger the chances of filing claims.

5. Moving to the Big City – Higher theft and accident rates, and denser traffic equals bigger risk of getting into a car accident (or getting your car stolen).

6. Insuring a Teen Driver – Teens are not the best drivers in the world, everyone knows that especially your car insurer. Adding a teen on your policy can make you pay rates that are three to four times higher.

Reader’s Question:

Why do car insurance companies here in my area charge high insurance premiums? I just moved from another state and I am shocked with the high insurance premiums that Houston car insurance companies are charging me. Is that normal?

Harold

You might now have been exerting enough time and effort to shop around. The car insurance companies you are talking to may be charging high car insurance rates, but this is not to say that there is not enough cheap car insurance Houston companies in your area. Reader’s Question:

Hi there. Can anyone tell me what the legal requirements for car insurance in Houston are? What will happen if you are caught without car insurance?

Eric

Houston, TX

The minimum requirements of car insurance in Houston as of April 2008 is based on a 25/50/25 scheme which means a minimum of $25,000 for injury or death per person with a maximum of $50,000 per accident as well as a $25,000 coverage for property damage. There are several ways to show proof of insurance in Houston such as a surety bond or self insurance, but I personally think getting car insurance in Houston would be more convenient.

It is a legal requirement in Houston to have proof of insurance at all times. If you are caught without proper insurance, you may be subject to fines. Get caught a second time and you are levied fines, and annual penalties, and your license and car registration gets suspended. The government might even have your vehicle impounded! In addition, your car insurance costs are likely to go up as car insurance companies will view you as a high risk driver. You will also be required to get an SR-22 before they will reinstate your license and registration. Trust me, you do not want this to happen as it will cost you more in the long run and add needless anxiety to your already hectic life.

To stress my point, I think it would be useful for you to remember that with the advances in technology, it is now much easier to access information. Suppliers who provide car insurance in Houston are required to report all insured clients policy effectivity dates, cancellations and expirations so they can detect who do not have insurance coverage or whose car insurance in Houston have lapsed. I strongly recommend that you get at least the minimum insurance coverage not just to abide by the state law but also for your own piece of mind.

Reader’s Question:

My dad says it is more practical to shop online for Houston car insurance than shopping using the yellow pages. Is he right? Thanks

Patrick

Houston, TX

In terms of convenience and quick results, your dad is right in saying that it is easier to shop online for Houston car insurance. The yellow pages may provide you with enough number of car insurance companies offering various insurance policies, but imagine the number of hours you have to spend contacting each of these companies. When you go online, you can get insurance quotes and requirements from Houston car insurance companies within a few minutes. That is convenience that the Internet offers and which yellow pages cannot give you.

However, the yellow pages is still preferred by some car owners because they can get results accurately. You can immediately ask the insurance broker or agent on the details of the car insurance policy you are interested in, especially if some details are not clear to you. With online shopping, you may have to wait for a few days before the agent replies to your email. You can also be sure that the rates you get are updated when you contact insurance brokers and agents. Some websites are not updated when it comes to requirements and rates, although most of these insurance websites do get regular updates

Automobile Insurance Policy Coverage Texas TX

Reader’s Question:

What are the requirements for a full coverage automobile insurance policy in Houston, Texas?

April

Houston, TX

According to Texas law, every driver (this includes those in Houston, Texas) must have an auto insurance (if vehicle is owned), or a comprehensive and collision coverage (if the vehicle is not yet fully paid). Auto insurances are used to pay for damages caused by accidents such as damage to a person, to a vehicle, or to properties.

In Texas, a driver has to have a guarantee that he/she can pay for the damages in accidents where he/she was found at fault. Under the Texas Transportation Code, a driver may choose any one of the following financial responsibilities:

1. Auto insurance policy
2. Security bond in compliance with Section 601.121
3. Security bond in compliance with Section 601.122
4. Security bond in compliance with Section 601.123
5. Personal insurance in compliance with Section 601.124

In most cases, drivers choose to obtain an auto insurance policy to cover their state-mandated financial responsibilities. In April 1, 2008, the state of Texas ordered a 25/50/25 minimum coverage (for physical injury, vehicular damage, and property damage, respectively) for every auto insurance. Prior to this law, the minimum coverage required was 20/40/15. Since this new law is only pertaining to the minimum coverage, it does not guarantee that it could cover all the damages, especially if the driver is found to be at fault. Therefore, the driver may have to consider getting an insurance policy that has a higher premium to ensure that damages beyond the minimum would also be covered.

Reader’s Question:

Hello, we are home in Houston Texas TX and we are hoping you can help. These days, we need to save money wherever we can. What do you suggest to reduce the cost of our auto insurance?

Jean & Frank

Houston, TX

Hi there jean and Frank,

How are things in Houston Texas TX?

You are correct. These days we all need to take steps to tighten the purse strings. There are a number of ways to control the cost of auto insurance. Most auto insurance providers offer discounts for multiple vehicle coverage. If you have more than one car, the cost of the auto insurance eon the second car will be significantly less if that coverage is provided by the same company. You may receive a deeper discount if you merge your auto insurance and homeowners insurance into the same provider.

When you combine these coverages, it is a good idea to list any organizations to which you belong. Many auto insurance carriers are now providing group affiliation discounts.

If you do jot use a vehicle for an extended period, you may want to look into storing the vehicle or taking it off the road. Auto insurance companies do not charge for vehicles that are legally off the road.

The easiest way to reduce your auto insurance premium is to execute an annual policy. Auto insurance carriers give discounts for annual contracts. Of course, the biggest savings on auto insurance coverage are generated by the results of a good driving record. The better the driver is, the lower the cost of auto insurance.

Here’s hoping these hints help. Of course like all contracts, you should seek a competitive auto insurance proposal from a provider in Houston Texas TX. Please check this site to receive cost-efficient proposals by national auto insurance carriers. Chances are you will be glad you did.

Reader’s Question:

I recently got into a wreck and my auto insurance in Houston, Texas TX is refusing to pay me. I need to file a complaint in Houston, TX and I need advise from anyone on this problem.

Chris

Houston, TX

You can always phone in your complaints to the Texas’s Insurance Department which will be ready to field complaints and possibly investigate on your case.

Remember this: before you contact anyone at the State level, it will be very necessary for you to speak with your insurance agent and the company’s complaint department first. The state will ask you to do that before they make any resolve for your case. Help yourself by saving some time and effort by calling your company in Houston, TX first.
In case you make a call that is relevant to your auto insurance complaint, you have to be sure to document the date, time and subject matter of your call. That should include the name of the person that you talked to in order for you to Cover Your Argument (CYA).

All correspondence, phone calls, replies, expenses and anything else you have relevant to this case will have to be filed by you accordingly. Read and re-read your policy so that you will know your arguments to whatever your insurer or agent claims to. It will be proper that you treat your insurer and agent as your enemy in the sense that they would always find a way to cover their @ss.

If you are still unhappy with your insurer’s response or worse, no action was made on your case from their end, then you can go ahead and escalate your case to the Texas’s Insurance Department.

Reader’s Question:

I am driving across the country with my roommate and we have uncontrollabel excitement over this thought. We will be using his car and I am wondering if my auto insurance cover me if I am driving and we have an accident.

RC

Houston, TX

That’s awesome! Your auto insurance would only come into play as a secondary form of coverage in this case. To a certain degree your auto policy travels with you wherever you go, but your roommate’s auto insurance will be the primary source of insurance in the event of an accident while you are driving his car.

The auto insurance on the driven vehicle will protect you in case of an accident while on the road. Try to check the auto policy just to be sure you are fully protected and that the deductibles offer enough protection. Check to see if the limits on the auto policy of the vehicle fail to cover the damages you cause. Your policy may very well pick up the difference so it is also better if you review your coverage. Always feel free to call your auto insurance agent before you leave and find a way to express ALL your concerns.

Drivers on cross country excursions sometimes push themselves and drive many miles a day, which can be too tiring to bear. Make sure you have safe, good tires and get some rest if your body feels like it. Always carry your auto insurance card with you and have phone numbers for your agent and the auto insurance company just in case you will need them, you never know. Fasten those seatbelts, and always keep your hands on the wheel, eyes on the road.
